The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has revealed that more than one million vehicles have been identified as carrying faulty Takata airbags through the industry website, www.ismyairbagsafe.com.au.

The website was launched by the FCAI in 2018 to help Australian consumers identify whether their vehicles are fitted with the faulty airbags – and since launch, more than 6.4 million vehicles have been checked on the site.

“That’s a tremendous result,” said Tony Weber, Chief Executive of the FCAI.

“The Australian public has visited the website over 6.4 million times, and that’s an indicator of strong engagement for this important safety campaign.

“The website has underpinned the powerful community response to the recall, with more than 100,000 vehicles rectified every month”

A faulty Takata airbag has the potential to seriously injure, or even kill, vehicle drivers or passengers, so it is imperative that all Australians check their vehicle on the website.

The launch of the innovative website has been supported by an extensive “Don’t Die Wondering” national advertising campaign including television, press, radio, cinema, outdoor billboards and social media.

Mr Weber urged vehicle owners in every state and territory to continue to actively use the website or text the word TAKATA to 0487247 224 to check the recall status of their vehicles.

“It’s very easy,” he said. “Once a vehicle is identified, vehicle owners can make arrangements with their brand’s local dealer to have all faulty airbags replaced. This work is free.”
